History
In 1921 Robert William Alderson founded a joinery business behind the present Spar shop in Ushaw Moor. What he could not have known at the time was that this one man business would be passed from father to son through four generations and that 80 years later Alderson's would be a thriving local business renowned throughout the region for the high quality, superior level of service they provide.
From the business' humble beginnings Robert William Alderson moved into a purpose made joiner shop at St. Luke's Church, then on to the company's present premises in the centre of the village in 1935. In the hands of Robert William's son, Bernard, the business continued to grow and thrive until Bernard retired at 65.
In 1974 Robert Alderson, the third generation, took the joinery business over. Since then it has grown in a number of different directions in its quest to meet the ever changing and diverse needs of its customers.
Today R & BH Alderson is a building contractor, joinery manufacturer, and plumbing and heating engineer that offers customers an all round building service. From minor jobs such as roof and window repairs, guttering, and replacement of locks, to major building works including loft conversions and house extensions, the company undertakes them all. When it comes to joinery, R & BH Alderson uses highly skilled craftsmen to carry out work on site and can also provide a wide range of quality panel doors, staircases, wardrobes and conservatories. A recent addition to the company's services is the supply and fitting of pre-finished study, kitchen, and bedroom furniture at highly competitive prices. R & BH Alderson is also a Corgi registered plumbing and heating engineers that can carry out a wide range of improvements.
Over the years the company has built up an extensive list of satisfied customers, and relies on word of mouth recommendations for much of its work. This is backed up by the relentless pursuit of customer satisfaction both in quality of the end product and the service the company delivers.
In 1997 Robert Alderson introduced his son, Greg, to the joinery business, which is the fourth generation. Greg has achieved his HNC qualification, and is now helping to run the family business along with our company's highly experienced contract manager, Tom Nichols, to continue building the business and enhancing the reputation his father, grandfather, and great grandfather worked so hard to achieve.
